Volunteering for Brake's campaigns team, you'll be immerged in a fast-paced, highly charged, political environment where everything you do counts. You will be given challenging responsibilities and the opportunity to shape your experience with us by proactively developing your own ideas.
You might:
- Monitor parliamentary activity on road safety, and help us engage MPs in promoting our campaigns in Westminster
- Help community campaigners co-ordinate protests calling for safer roads to tackle casualties, and write press releases to promote their event to local media
- Write up the stories of volunteers bereaved or injured in a road crash for use in our media work and on our website
- Write articles for our email bulletins, to build support for our campaigns, and create and issue bulletins using our e-communications software
- Give quotes to journalists on cases of dangerous driving, cuts to spending in road safety, or proposals for legislative change
- Call journalists to persuading them to cover stories about our work, and attend media events.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is politically minded, passionate about benefitting communities and protecting the vulnerable, and bursting with the energy to take up campaign work. You will also gain the necessary skills to work in any office environment.
Person specification:
You should be a university graduate with a relevant degree such as social sciences. Other appropriate qualifications and experience will be considered.
You must be able to demonstrate:
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- an ability to work in an organised way under pressure, plan your own workload and meet deadlines
- proficiency with basic office software
- passion and a determined attitude.
Additional information:
A minimum of three days per week is required over a minimum period of three months. Hours/days are flexible to accommodate other paid work commitments.
You will be working for Brake's campaigns director, with day-to-day supervision from a senior campaigns officer, in a small and dedicated team.
The job is based in Brake's national head office in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
