Giant Walking Bus on 20 June 2012: get marching!

  • PDF

Walking bus logoAt 10am on Wednesday 20 June 2012 more than 100,000 kids will march for road safety from their school gates in the annual Giant Walking Bus! This brilliant event is part of our Kids Say Slow Down campaign and raises awareness of the dangers of traffic and how cool it is to walk, and raises funds for Brake's services for road crash victims. Every year we try to beat our own world record too for the biggest walking bus! Let's make 2012 the biggest ever!

Kids of all ages from London to as far afield as Hebridian islands all take part in this giant march for a giant reason: to say no to speeding drivers, and yes to walking! The UK has one of the worst death rates in Europe of children killed on foot, most on their way to or from school. Half our kids are driven to school, increasing pollution and danger. It doesn't matter whether your bit of the march has five kids in it or 700, you can take part and make a difference!

walkingbus1/ Great summer term project
In the days leading up to your march, kids can research traffic pollution and danger and transport choices, and make their own 'slow down' and 'get walking' placards and other creative campaign tools, such as leaflets and posters! A great way to meet safety and citizenship goals and promote your travel plan or healthy or eco school status.

2/ Slow down drivers and get kids walking
Your march (in a crocodile of supervised kids holding hands on safe pavements, or around your grounds if there are no safe pavements) gives kids a voice, helping them tell drivers to slow down and drive less! Your destination could be a park to plant a tree in memory of road crash victims, or simply a photo call for your local paper and school newsletter at your school gates with children waving placards. Have a look at some of the fab kids who took part last year on our flickr pages

3/ Help bereaved families
Kids can be sponsored by family and friends to take part, helping fund Brake's campaigns and services for families bereaved by road crashes. We give you sponsorship envelopes and certificates to say thank you.
