Environment Minister Edwin Poots today launched the Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy for the next ten years and announced a consultation on a Graduated Driver Licensing scheme which would reform the learner and restricted driving schemes.

Ellen Booth, Brake’s campaigns officer, said: “Brake welcomes these announcements which are a strong step in the right direction for reducing devastating casualties on Northern Ireland’s roads, particularly those involving young people. Brake would urge Westminster to look to this example and include dedicated casualty reduction targets for young people in the upcoming Strategic Framework for Road Safety. Graduated Driver Licensing has the potential to save many young lives, as it has done in a number of other countries. We will be advocating its introduction and pressing for a similar move throughout the UK.”
