Brake has spoken out in support of Olympic rower James Cracknell’s campaign 'use your head, use a helmet'.
James has created a film about his experience of being hit on the head by a truck wing mirror while cycling in America, explaining that wearing a helmet saved his life. Watch the film on YouTube.
Brake spoke out in support of cycle helmets on CBBC Newsround, and is appealing to cyclists of all ages to always wear a helmet, as well as calling for Government investment in road engineering to help protect cyclists.
Brake campaigns director Julie Townsend says: “Wearing a helmet is an incredibly important, simple step that all cyclists can take to help protect their heads. Quite simply, if you wear one you’re a lot less likely to suffer serious head injury in a crash, and it could save your life.
“We’re appealing to cyclists of all ages to make a commitment to always wearing a helmet when you cycle. And we’re appealing to the Government to take action to make cycling safer, by introducing more safe cycle paths and 20mph limits in towns and cities. Cycling can be a fantastic alternative to car use – good for your health and the environment – so we should be investing in measures to enable more people to get on their bikes safely.”
