The forgotten victims

  • PDF

Deaths and serious injuries on roads cause horrific suffering. These needless casualties are sudden, violent, often caused by a criminal act, and result in devastation and upheaval for the bereaved and injured victims. Yet these families remain the forgotten victims. They desperately need comprehensive support, guidance and information, but more often than not they don’t get it, due to a failure of government to fund it.

Victims of burglary automatically receive an offer of face-to-face support, through a service funded by government. Road crash victims whose loved ones have been violently killed, or who have suffered appalling life-changing injuries, do not.

Brake works to support bereaved and seriously injured crash victims through a national helpline and support literature, part-funded by the Ministry of Justice. But this remains a grossly-under-funded area, with many victims unable to access a clear pathway of support.

As well as striving to support as many bereaved and seriously injured crash victims as comprehensively as possible, Brake lobbies government to ensure all these victims receive an automatic and prompt offer of specialist, quality support, and are able to access the range of support they need.
