Talk about road safety in school
Use our lesson plans and assembly presentation to explore why footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross, slow traffic and clean air are so important for children to be able to make safe and healthy journeys. Help children learn about campaigning for change and introduce the Kids' Manifesto for safe and healthy journeys. Our road safety postcard is a great way for children to ask their grown ups to keep them safe near roads. There's also a fun activity sheet to help children spot safe crossing places while out and about.

Lesson plans
Brake's Kids Walk is an opportunity for children to speak up for their right to make safe and healthy journeys, and to call for the five things that they need to make their journeys safe: footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross roads, slow traffic and clean traffic.
These lesson plans complement the other resources in your action pack and will help you to teach clear, consistent and effective road safety messages. They will enable you to give children the vocabulary they need to talk about road safety and help them develop techniques to campaign for safe and healthy journeys.
The lesson plans support curriculum requirements for PSHE, Citizenship and English.
These lesson plans include activities to:
- Help children talk about road safety
- Help children ask grown ups to keep them safe near roads
- Find out what children think about their journeys
- Campaign for a road safety issue
Road safety education and training should be appropriate and effective for pupils of all ages and abilities.
When adapting lessons, please be aware of pupils’ individual requirements and adapt lessons to fit their needs. Use visual aids and sensory play to help pupils learn and understand the connection between road danger and their own safety. Focus on road safety basics, such as holding hands with a grown up when walking near roads, how to cross roads at safe crossing places and always wearing a seat belt/sitting in a child seat when travelling by car.
Brake produces lots of different resources to help children of all ages and abilities learn about road safety. Find out more at brake.org.uk/teach.

Shout out for safe and healthy journeys for children
At Brake we believe that everyone has the right to make safe and healthy journeys, and we have lots of experience of helping people campaign for road safety. Brake’s Kids Walk is a great opportunity to get involved in a road safety campaign, helping children to call for the key things they need to make their journeys safe: footpaths, cycle paths, safe places to cross, slow traffic and clean traffic. Please present the Kids’ manifesto for safe and healthy journeys to a local decision-maker (your local authority or MP). There is space to write what changes you need to make roads near your school safer.

Fundraise for Brake
Sadly, 15 children aged 4-11 are harmed on roads in Britain every day. When the worst happens, Brake is here to help. We provide emotional and practical support to thousands of families affected by road death and serious injury.
Brake's Kids Walk is a great opportunity to support Brake's vital work caring for families affected by road crashes and campaigning for safe roads for all. You could hold a sponsored walk or a 'wear your stripes' day, or simply ask parents and carers to text KIDSWALK to 70085 to donate £3 to Brake.
Fundraising and donations are a crucial source of funding for our work and we are so grateful for your support.
