Resources for nurseries, childminders, EYFS and lower primary

Our Road Safety Hero card games aim to introduce key road safety concepts and vocabulary to students while encouraging co-operative play.

If you want to teach road safety basics to very young children (ages 2–7), please use our Beep Beep! Day resources. Beep Beep! Days focus on road safety basics, including holding hands with a grown up when walking near roads and crossing roads at safe places.

Lesson plans

About the lesson plans Down arrow icon to open accordion

Our lesson plans will help you to teach clear, consistent and effective road safety messages. They will enable you to give children the vocabulary they need to talk about road safety and help them develop techniques to campaign for safe and healthy journeys.

These lesson plans are tailored to the theme of Road Safety Week 2024, celebrating our Road Safety Heroes who support people after a road crash. You can also use Road Safety Week as an opportunity to reinforce other key road safety messages, reminding pupils to look and listen carefully before crossing roads in safe places, and talking to them about the health and environmental benefits of walking and cycling.

It’s also an ideal time to send important messages home to parents and carers about how they can keep children safe near roads, raise awareness in their community, or launch a campaign and work with your local authority to address a road safety issue.

The lesson plans support curriculum requirements for PSHE, Citizenship and English. Each lesson can be delivered on its own or several different lessons could be delivered on different days during Road Safety Week.

These lesson plans include activities to:

  • Celebrate the Road Safety Heroes that help after a crash and help keep us safe near roads
  • Help children talk about road safety
  • Help children ask grown ups to keep them safe near roads.

Road safety education and training should be appropriate and effective for pupils of all ages and abilities.

When adapting lessons, please be aware of pupils’ individual requirements and adapt lessons to fit their needs. Use visual aids and sensory play to help pupils learn and understand the connection between road danger and their own safety. Focus on road safety basics, such as holding hands with a grown up when walking near roads, how to cross roads at safe crossing places and always wearing a seat belt/sitting in a child seat when travelling by car.

Brake produces lots of different resources to help children of all ages and abilities learn about road safety. Find out more at brake.org.uk/teach.

Lesson plans for primary schools

The assembly presentations focus on the After the Crash - Every road victim counts theme of Road Safety Week, and will help children understand:

  • Who cares for someone after a crash, and who helps us make safe, healthy journeys
  • How we can all use roads safely to protect ourselves and each other
  • How we can ask others to help keep us safe near roads.

The content in this assembly can be adapted to suit your school's needs or to highlight any road safety issues that may be particularly relevant in your local area.
