Whoever we are, and however we travel, we can all do something to protect ourselves and other people from harm on our roads.
Whether you work in operations or are out with people across your community every day, Road Safety Week is a great opportunity for you to talk about how we can work together to make roads safer.
How to take part in Road Safety Week
Safe people on the move
Whether we walk, wheel, ride or drive, we all share our roads when we are on the move. Whoever we are, and however we travel, by using our roads safely we help to protect ourselves and each other.
Those with the potential to do the most harm must take the greatest responsibility for safeguarding people who are more vulnerable on roads than them.
Your Road Safety Week action pack includes:
- Toolkit for emergency services – ideas and guidance to help you and your staff to take part, including information about safe vehicles and how they save lives.
- Resources for educators – to help you talk about the work you do with staff and pupils in local schools.
- Details of our free webinar – get practical, take-home tips that will help you ensure your drivers are as safe as possible on every journey.
- Information about The Big Tea Brake – all you need to make time for tea and raise funds to support Brake's work.
- Memorial ideas – ways of remembering road victims and donating in memory.
- Posters – to print and display in your workplace.

Take action: run a Road Safety Week operation
Use Road Safety Week as an opportunity to plan activity around an issue affecting roads in your area.
Your operation doesn't have to be large. Use local collision data, intelligence and community concerns to inform your operation. Even an hour of activity can make a difference.
Click the headings below to explore ideas for a Road Safety Week operation.
Always plan and conduct operational activity in accordance with your force's own policies, procedures, intelligence and risk assessments.
Cyclists are some of the more vulnerable road users.
Run an operation focused on protecting them and encouraging safe overtaking. Consider combining enforcement with engagement and education initiatives with drivers and cyclists.
Focus on vehicle roadworthiness, including tyres, lights and other defects.
Consider combining enforcement with public education about simple checks drivers can carry out to keep their vehicles safe.
Work with a local school to focus on road safety at drop-off or collection time.
Your activity could address speeding, dangerous or obstructive parking, mobile phone use, or safe use of child seats.
Neighbourhood officers or PCSOs could also speak to local schoolchildren about being safe road users. Click here for our Road Safety Week education resources.
Run a Roads Policing operation targeting the behaviours known to contribute to death and serious injury on our roads.
Use local data and intelligence to decide where activity is most needed.
Focus activity on speeding at locations identified through collision data, intelligence or community concerns.
Neighbourhood teams could also work alongside local Community Speedwatch schemes.
Target driver distraction and illegal mobile phone use.
Combine enforcement with education about the risks and consequences of distracted driving.

Make time for tea and fundraise for Brake
This November, we’d love you to put the kettle on and join The Big Tea Brake. Whether you’re hosting online, in the office or out in your community, it’s the perfect excuse to gather for a cuppa, enjoy some sweet treats, and raise vital funds to support road crash victims and campaign for safer streets.
All money raised through The Big Tea Brake will help fund Brake’s campaign work and National Road Victim Service, which every year supports more than a thousand families affected by road death and injury.

Host or attend a memorial event to remember road victims
Road Safety Week is a special time to host or attend a memorial event in memory of road victims.
A memorial event can be as big or small as you choose. It could be a public event for others to join, or a private occasion for close family and friends.
You could hold a minute’s silence for all the families who have lost loved ones in road crashes, or include a short period of time for reflection at the beginning of a meeting to pay respects.
There is more information and ideas for how to host a memorial event in your free Road Safety Week toolkit (coming soon).
Donations in memory
If you are hosting a memorial event, please consider collecting donations to Brake. We can help you with donation buckets and collection envelopes, or help you set up an online fundraiser or tribute page.
Every year, Brake supports thousands of families affected by road death and serious, life-changing injury. There are many more who need our help. We receive no government funding, and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to fund our work. We are so grateful for your support.
Please email fundraise@brake.org.uk for information about collecting donations at a memorial event.
Memory Mile
Take part in a Memory Mile – a simple, personal walk to honour someone special.
You can walk alone, alongside family and friends, or bring together your wider community. There is no set route or required location – your mile can be wherever feels most meaningful to you, whether that’s a local park, a favourite walking spot, or a place connected to the person you are remembering.
As you walk, you might share stories and memories, or simply take a quiet moment to reflect.
