Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s prevention team identified a lack of access to comprehensive road safety education for children and young people. Working with SkillZONE, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue created an immersive road safety education setting, with street settings including pavements, traffic lights, cyclists and vehicles. This created a safe environment for children and young people to learn about road dangers.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service also attended community events and worked with other road safety organisations to extend the reach of their road safety education programme.

Teachers took children to road safety education events at SkillZONE, and 100% of teachers surveyed said they felt that their class are more safety conscious after their visit. By targeting students older than 16 with their tailored interventions and practical skills training, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue are working to mitigate risks and promote safer behaviours on the road.

Yvette Greenhouse, Station Manager and Emily Booker, Road Safety Lead at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service Prevention said: “Our wide-ranging road safety prevention activities, including educational campaigns and programmes encouraging people to become safer road users, aim to ensure our communities can travel safely, whether they are walking, cycling, using public transport, riding, or driving. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is proud and delighted to have won this award. This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication and professionalism we put in every day to make Gloucestershire safer.”

The Public Sector Driver Safety Award, sponsored by TTC Group, was presented to Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service at the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2024. The award celebrates the public sector organisation that has implemented initiatives that effectively enable drivers to be safe.
