How do you ensure you take a person-centred, trauma-informed approach when providing legal support to road victim families?

At JMW, we know the devastating impact a road crash can have but recognise that each family’s experience, needs and response to loss and injury can be different. We take time to understand their circumstances, concerns, priorities and preferred ways of receiving support. We are mindful to minimise distress, recognising the flow of information can be overwhelming, so we ensure that we communicate with clients by their chosen means and that legal processes are explained in plain, clear language.

Why is it important that road victims get specialist legal support in the aftermath of a crash?

Specialist legal support can make a real difference to a road victim’s recovery and future following a serious injury. It’s not just about the legal process but helping people rebuild their lives. The dedicated personal injury team at JMW work alongside our client support manager, healthcare professionals and support networks to ensure access to the right support is provided to an injured person to give them the best opportunity to achieve maximum recovery and independence.

We understand how devastating the loss of a loved one is and how daunting the inquest process and other investigations can be; we guide and support families through it, ensuring their questions are answered and obtaining compensation to safeguard the family’s future.

What legal complexities might road victim families encounter, compared with some of the other cases you work with?

There can be a number of legal complexities following a road traffic collision. For example, the collision may involve several vehicles all insured with different insurers; a driver may be uninsured or untraceable. Evidence may be disputed and if someone has been fatally injured, their account will be unavailable and cases may, therefore, rely heavily on incident reconstruction and expert analysis. Claims may involve dependents, relatives or the estate of the deceased who may have different rights to bring claims. There can also be several parallel investigations running at different times which can create complexity and delay. However, the team at JMW are there to advise and guide throughout to ensure road victims and their families are fully supported and understand what is happening.

How do you support Brake?

Since joining Brake’s England and Wales legal panel last year, JMW has been proud to sponsor Brake’s Annual Reception and Rowan Tree Ball, as well as sponsoring a hole at Brake golf days. A JMW team took part in the 2025 Brake golf day and we’re supporting the Paws for Safer Roads dog walking challenge in July 2026.

On 1 July 2026 we hosted a quiz night to raise money for Brake. There were more than 20 teams taking part from across the legal and rehabilitation communities, with Brake’s CEO Ross Moorlock making an appearance! In total, the event raised £8,000.

Our client, AB, got in touch with JMW after being supported by Brake’s National Road Victim Service. She had sustained serious injuries in a road traffic incident in 2025. AB was a pedestrian when she was hit by a large 4x4 vehicle, which then drove over her causing significant injuries.

They included multiple fractures of her arms, shoulder and collar bones, fractures to her hips and pelvis, unstable spinal vertebrae fractures, 11 broken ribs, internal bleeding to her spleen, and chest and brain injuries. She was in ICU initially and underwent numerous operations. One of our specialist serious injury lawyers went to visit AB in hospital to discuss how we could support her, alongside Brake.

Following discharge from hospital, AB required significant support from family. She was self-employed, running her own business, and her inability to work was causing her financial concern. We engaged in early discussions with the insurance company for the motor vehicle and obtained an interim payment to help AB and alleviate the financial pressure and worry. We arranged an Immediate Needs Assessment to see what additional support could be provided to AB and as a result we were able to arrange private medical treatment.

We began collating expert medical evidence to set out AB’s injuries, prognosis for the future when the motor insurers made an offer to settle the claim. We advised AB to reject the offer until further evidence was obtained, particularly from a neurologist to report on potential brain injury findings. A further offer was put forward, and a settlement was reached in March 2026. AB has now sought advice from the JMW Private Wealth team and is currently in the process of setting up a personal injury trust to protect her compensation.
