Brake celebrates fleet industry excellence and crowns the winners of the UK Fleet Champions Awards 2026

Fleet sector comes together to recognise the great work of organisations striving to reduce road deaths and injuries caused by work vehicles

Brake, the road safety charity, hosted its annual UK Fleet Champions Awards ceremony last night (Wednesday 30 September) at New Dock Hall at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

More than 300 people from across the fleet sector gathered to see the winners and runners-up of 12 awards revealed.

These prestigious awards were announced during a celebratory dinner to honour the 51 shortlisted organisations and individuals for their outstanding commitment to road safety. The winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges from across the fleet industry.

See the full list of winners below.

Brake has been running an awards programme for safety in the fleet sector for more than 20 years – to recognise and celebrate the important achievements of organisations and individuals working to prevent crashes and reduce pollution caused by work vehicles.

For the third consecutive year, Driving for Better Business by National Highways was Brake’s delivery partner, while fleet telematics provider Quartix was the headline sponsor for this year’s awards. A further 10 fleet suppliers and organisations sponsored individual award categories, demonstrating the sector’s strong support both for Brake and for the awards.

Brake’s CEO Ross Moorlock opened proceedings by highlighting that road safety is fundamentally a human issue, with real people at the heart of business decisions and performance, and behind road collision statistics. He brought to the crowd’s attention the fact that in 2025, nearly one-third of all road deaths – an estimated 445 people – involved somebody who was driving for work [1].

He went on to acknowledge the Government’s Road Safety Strategy that was published in January, but added that there is urgency in translating targets into meaningful change. “Strategies do not save lives,” he said. “Action saves lives. Investment saves lives. Leadership saves lives.”

Ross told the audience that Brake’s National Road Victim Service is currently supporting around 1,000 people across the UK whose lives have been devastated by road death and injury, with an estimated 2,000 new referrals into the service this year alone.

He also spoke of Brake’s work providing police forces across the UK with specialist bereavement boxes and property bags so that when someone dies on the road, their belongings can be returned to their family with compassion and dignity.

Ross said: “We continue to do all of this without any central Government funding across England and Wales. We remain incredibly grateful to the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland for their commitment to supporting road crash victims in Scotland. But elsewhere, everything I have described tonight exists because of our funders, partners, sponsors and fundraising evenings exactly like this one.”

This was the perfect moment for a rallying call to everyone in attendance to dig deep and contribute to the evening’s fundraising, which included a raffle, a fun game of heads or tails bingo, and opportunities to make donations to the charity. In total, an incredible £3,300 was raised on the night to support Brake’s work supporting road victims and campaigning for safer roads.

Ross added: “These awards matter because they showcase leadership, demonstrate what good looks like and inspire others to raise their standards. The organisations being recognised tonight are not simply collecting awards plaques; they are setting benchmarks for an entire sector. They are proving that road safety and business performance go hand in hand. And they are demonstrating that protecting people is not a compliance exercise; it is a leadership responsibility.”

After thanking headline sponsor, Quartix, event partner Driving for Better Business by National Highways, the category sponsors and supporters, Ross handed the stage to guest speakers Sean Maher from Quartix and Mark Cartwright from National Highways.

Sean spoke of how every improvement in fleet safety “brings someone one step closer to getting home safely at the end of each day”. He said: “Whether you run two vans or 20,000 vans in any sector, putting safety at the heart of how you operate is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make.”

Mark noted that employers in the sector can make a real difference through “better policies, better training, better vehicles”, calling fleet organisations “our brothers in arms” in driving forward safer roads.

Brake's CEO opened the awards ceremony with a speech about the latest road casualty statistics.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the winner of the Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety. This special award is given every year to someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to road safety, not just within their organisation but through the wider community.

In 2009, the recipient of this award was Geoffrey Bray, chairman of Fleet Service GB. In a fitting full-circle moment, Geoffrey’s son and Fleet Service GB’s sales director, Marcus Bray, was welcomed onto the stage to present the award to this year’s recipient.

The winner, Vicki McCarthy from VolkerRail, has demonstrated a profound and sustained commitment to road safety after the death of her 16-year-old daughter in a crash in 2014. Alongside a professional role as a training coordinator for a large fleet, Vicki has become a powerful advocate for road safety – delivering talks and sharing their lived experience to help people understand the real-world consequences of unsafe driving, particularly among young drivers.

The award was presented in memory of Vicki’s daughter, Jordanna. Vicki took to the stage to receive her award to a standing ovation – the audience visibly moved by her win and her heartfelt acceptance speech.

Vicki said: “I’ve missed out on so many opportunities and so many memories. I will never get the opportunity to plump my daughter’s wedding dress. I don’t want another parent to be in my shoes, living my heartache, my nightmare. And that is why I do what I do. I can only say thank you to [the people] who have stood beside me in my darkest moments, in the grief. This is an absolute honour. Thank you.”

Anne-Marie Penny, senior road safety policy advisor and lead for Driving for Better Business, said: "The UK Fleet Champions Awards provide an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding efforts of organisations and individuals who are making a real difference to occupational road safety. We are delighted to continue supporting Brake in highlighting those who are setting the standard for responsible road risk management. Together, we can inspire positive change, creating a culture where safe, efficient and sustainable driving for work is the norm, and where everyone returns home safe and well, every day."

Sean added: "Safer roads start with the decisions fleets make every day, and this year's entries showed just how much commitment there is across the industry. We're proud to support Brake's vital work, and it was a privilege to celebrate the winners at such a memorable evening. Their achievements show what's possible, and I hope they inspire many more fleets to follow their lead."
