How to squat
If you’re new to squats or unsure about your technique, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Check out the helpful advice and video below to get started.
Proper form is key to getting the most out of your squats and avoiding injury. Follow these simple steps to nail the perfect squat.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly pointed out.
- Engage your core muscles and keep your back straight.
- Lower your body down by bending your knees and hips, as if you were about to sit in a chair.
- Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor, or as low as feels comfortable.
- Push through your heels to stand back up to the starting position.
- Repeat for 10 to 15 reps, for three sets.
Start slow, focus on good form, and remember – you’ve got this!

Fun ways to fit squats into your day
Taking on the 100 Squats a Day challenge doesn’t have to be daunting – it’s easier than you think. By slotting squats into your daily routine, you can make it fun, manageable, and part of your everyday life. Here are some simple ideas to get you started:
- Morning boost: Start your day with 20 squats while brushing your teeth.
- TV workout: Add squats during ad breaks or between episodes of your favourite show.
- Teatime: Do 10 squats while waiting for the kettle to boil.
- Family fun: Turn it into a game with the kids – challenge them to squat along with you!
You can break your 100 squats into smaller sets throughout the day or tackle them all at once – whatever works best for you.
Squatting as a team
The 100 Squats a Day challenge is even more fun when you do it with others. Get your workplace or team involved and turn it into a group effort.
- Morning warm-up: Start the workday with a quick team squat session to energise everyone.
- Meeting moves: Incorporate squats into your meetings – do a set of 10 squats during a brainstorming session or before you get started.
- Themed squat days: Make it fun with themed days – fancy dress Friday squats, team colours Tuesday, or a music-inspired squat party.
- Squat relay: Split into teams and take turns completing sets of squats, cheering each other on.
- Squat challenge leaderboard: Create a friendly competition by tracking each team member’s progress on a whiteboard or shared spreadsheet.
By squatting together, you’ll be stronger as a team and make an even bigger impact for Brake. Sign up as a team today and let’s squat for safer roads!
How does taking part in 100 Squats a Day support road victims?
At Brake, we believe that every road death is preventable. Our vision is to stop road crashes, reduce harm, and ensure every road victim gets the support they need, for as long as they need it.
We understand that the right support at the right time can change the course of someone's life. Brake’s National Road Victim Service is a free, professional, trauma-informed service providing expert emotional and practical support to anyone who has been bereaved or seriously injured in a road crash road.
In 2024, we supported more than 2000 families in their darkest and most difficult times. Sadly, we know there are many more who need our help, and your support makes a real difference.
