Road traffic crashes are the #1 killer of youth. Young people have a key role in demanding and creating road safety. We should listen to them and support their movements!

Etienne Krug, World Health Organization

At this stage, young people become able to explore hypothetical situations and relate them to current events or social issues.

Teaching should include step-by-step explanations of broader concepts, utilising charts and other visual aids.

Interests become more global, and teaching should reflect this.

They are likely to become more interested in game-based learning and their use of social media is likely to increase rapidly, alongside their desire to contribute more widely to social interests and concerns.

Key road safety messages to teach at this age:

  • No-one should be hurt on roads, and everyone has the right to make safe and healthy journeys
  • Road crashes are the leading cause of death for young people worldwide
  • Road deaths and serious injuries have a devastating effect on families and communities
  • Pollution from road traffic causes disease and contributes to climate change
  • We know and understand the solutions to prevent deaths from road crashes and pollution and they are available to us now
  • Young people are the road-users and decision-makers of the future and can help achieve a world with safe and healthy mobility for everyone
