Brake hosted its annual UK Fleet Champions Awards ceremony last night (Thursday 25 September) at New Dock Hall at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
More than 270 people from across the fleet sector gathered to see the winners and runners-up of 12 awards revealed. These prestigious awards were announced during a celebratory dinner to honour the 50 shortlisted organisations and individuals for their outstanding commitment to road safety. The winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges from across the fleet industry.

The UK Fleet Champions Awards have been a major event in Brake’s calendar for more than 20 years, celebrating the hard work and dedication of fleet organisations and suppliers striving to reduce road deaths and injuries, and reduce pollution caused by their vehicles.
For the second year, Brake delivered the awards in partnership with Driving for Better Business by National Highways. Geotab supported the charity as headline sponsor. Individual award category sponsorships from a further 10 fleet suppliers and organisations underlined sector support for these awards and the charity from across the fleet industry.
Last year’s winner of the Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety, Nick Reed, had the honour of presenting the same award to this year’s winner Tony Crook, road safety manager at Lancashire County Council. Crook has dedicated more than 30 years of service to road safety development and held previous roles as road safety lead for the National Fire Chiefs Council, staunchly advocating for vision zero and the safe systems approach. He was the first ever recipient of this prestigious award from the public sector.

Brake’s CEO Ross Moorlock opened the evening ceremony with a stirring call for everyone in the room to challenge the ‘normalisation’ of road death and serious injury. Earlier the same day, the Department for Transport released its latest road casualty statistics, revealing that in 2024 1,602 people lost their lives on British roads, while a further 27,865 suffered serious, life-changing injuries, marking another year with no significant improvement in road safety.
Moorlock addressed these shocking figures in his opening speech, reminding guests that work-related road traffic collisions are estimated to contribute to a third of UK road deaths and a fifth of serious injuries. He also shared his frustration with the lack of national progress and the Government’s slow adoption of interventions to make roads safer, thanking those in the audience for setting standards within the fleet sector, and urging everyone to take further action to reduce road death and injury. Moorlock also revealed that more than 900 families are currently receiving specialist support from Brake following a road crash, a service that receives no funding from central government.
Guest speaker Paul Steinberg from Road Safety Trust was next to the stage to address – with characteristic humour and lightness – the fleet managers in the room, the often-unsung heroes in the world in which they operate. Steinberg spoke about the vital importance of prevention, a shared responsibility for safety, operating within a culture of care.
Attendees on the night made generous donations to support Brake, buying raffle tickets and participating in fundraising activities. Together they raised more than £3,000 to help fund Brake’s work supporting road victims and campaigning for safer roads.
Ross Moorlock, Brake CEO, commented: “These awards matter not only because they celebrate success, but because they set standards. This year we have made the entry and judging process even more rigorous and we are delighted to recognise those organisations and individuals who are truly leading the way. We’d like to thank everyone who joined us for last night’s awards and our sponsors Geotab, partners Driving for Better Business by National Highways, and our individual award category sponsors, for making it all possible.”
Oliver Holt, sales manager UKI at Geotab, commented: “We’re passionate about safety so it’s been a pleasure to support Brake celebrating the fleet professionals who are working to improve standards across the industry. Well done to all the winners of this year’s awards and thank you to everyone who took part in this prestigious event.”
Mark Cartwright, head of the commercial vehicle incident prevention team at National Highways, added: “It's been another fantastic night for our industry and all of us in attendance are inspired to take further action against road crashes. A huge congratulations to all the worthy winners and to all those nominated.”

It is simply unacceptable that, as a society, we largely accept people being killed on our roads every day. All of you in this room care. You get it. You live and breathe this every day. But we also need to reach those who don’t - to challenge the normalisation of road death and injury that has gone on for far too long.

"These awards matter not only because they celebrate success, but because they set standards," said Brake CEO Ross Moorlock
