More than 250 people from across the fleet sector came together to enjoy a celebration dinner and honour the 43 shortlisted organisations and individuals for their outstanding commitment to road safety.

The UK Fleet Champions Awards are a major event in Brake’s calendar, celebrating the hard work and dedication of fleet organisations striving to reduce road deaths and injuries, and reduce pollution caused by their vehicles.

This year’s awards were sponsored by Lightfoot and delivered in partnership with Driving for Better Business by National Highways. Individual award sponsorship from a further 10 fleet suppliers and organisations underlined support for these awards from across the industry. Entries were judged by an independent panel of experts and twelve winners were announced on the night and a further thirteen were highly commended by the judges. See the full list of winners below.

The prestigious Kevin Storey Award for Outstanding Commitment to Road Safety was presented to Professor Nick Reed, in recognition of his exceptional expertise and dedication, gained across nearly 20 years in the sector. The founder of Reed Mobility, Professor Reed was especially commended for his pioneering research, instrumental role in the legislative process leading to the new Automated Vehicles Act, and for driving collaboration across the road safety sector to end road death and injury. Beyond his consultancy work, he was also praised for giving time and expertise generously to road safety initiatives as a trustee of a number of national charities, including Brake, and has been a judge for Brake’s Fleet Awards programme for many years.

The host of the evening was Brake’s CEO, Ross Moorlock, who talked about the devastating impact of road crashes on families and reminded attendees that a third of road deaths involve someone driving for work. He urged everyone in the room to come together to help achieve the shared goal of ending deaths and injuries on roads. Attendees also took part in fundraising games and a raffle, raising thousands to support Brake’s work caring for families bereaved by road crashes. Moorlock also reminded guests to take action by signing up to Road Safety Week which takes place 17-23 November.

Ross Moorlock said: “Last night was all about fun and celebration but at the heart of everything we do there’s always a serious message. At Brake, we believe that no one should be hurt or killed on a road, and it’s unacceptable to us that deaths and injuries continue to happen, every single day, on UK roads.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended and supported this year’s awards, helping us to celebrate all those in the fleet industry who are taking action to help end road death and injury in the fleet industry.”

Brake campaigns for safe and healthy roads through seeking government policies and investment to end the carnage, and through projects that help communities, schools and employers promote safe and pollution-free streets locally. Brake delivers Road Safety Week, the UK’s biggest road safety campaign.

Brake is the national provider of care and support to victims of road crashes and their families through the National Road Victim Service, helping families cope with the shock, turmoil and devastation that road crashes cause families across the UK every day.

Preferred language use

Words are important and using the wrong word, intentionally or unintentionally, can cause distress or harm, specifically when describing traumatic events. We ask you to consider the following language principles when reporting stories related to road crashes:

  • Please do not use ‘accident’ in relation to road crashes. Please use ‘crash’ or ‘collision’. This is because road crashes are not accidents and are highly preventable. E.g. a car crashing because the driver has drunk a considerable amount of alcohol is not an accident.
  • Please use ‘road deaths’ rather than fatalities. ‘Casualties’ is also an acceptable term when referring to deaths and serious injuries although this may be less impactful.
  • Where possible please use ‘people who walk or cycle’ or ‘people who walk and ride’ rather than ‘cyclists’, ‘pedestrians’ etc. This is because it is very rare for people to only use one form of transport. Many people will drive, cycle, walk, ride and therefore should not be segregated into seemingly opposing groups.
