Taking place each November, Road Safety Week is a national campaign run by road safety charity Brake, to raise awareness of the impact of road death and injury and call for key measures to make roads safer. Beginning on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Road Safety Week brings into sharp focus the shocking fact that 1,700 people die on UK roads every year, and a further 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. Brake argues that this is an unacceptable tragedy that must be stopped. Thousands of schools, organisations, emergency services, campaigners and communities will show their support by taking part in Road Safety Week 2025, reaching millions across the UK through events, fundraising, media coverage and social media.

Safe Vehicles Save Lives theme

Safe vehicles is a vital component of the safe systems approach to road safety – a shared approach to prevent death and serious injury from road crashes. This year, Brake has chosen to shine a spotlight on the importance of safe vehicles that are designed to prevent crashes, and to cause less harm if they do crash. From automated driver assistance systems that help drivers keep within speed limits and brake in an emergency, to seat belts and airbags, this year’s campaign will focus on how modern vehicle safety technology can reduce road death and injury.

Brake will also be raising awareness of how to make sure vehicles are roadworthy, so that every time we get in a vehicle, we are as safe as we can be, whoever we are and however we travel.

Taking part

Employers, schools, emergency services, individuals and communities are invited to sign up and take part in Road Safety Week 2025, and to learn more about the evidence behind vehicle safety and how it can reduce road death and injury.

The charity will provide an action pack of free resources to help people take part, including stakeholder toolkits, videos and infographics to share, and facts about safe vehicles, including how to carry out roadside checks. For schools, there will be educational resources to help children and young people learn about vehicle safety. There will also be a webinar for employers and emergency services, fundraising opportunities, memorial events and lots of other ways to get involved and support this vital campaign.

This year’s theme is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about evidence-based systems that are proven to reduce road death and injury and explore how together we can make real change.

Raising awareness

Every year, more than 1,700 people die on UK roads. Another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. These numbers are shocking, and there has been no significant reduction for more than a decade. Brake believes in a world where no one is killed or harmed on a road and safe vehicles can help us get there. Because safe vehicles save lives. This Road Safety Week, Brake will be sharing the real stories behind road crashes, the devastating impact on our society and how we can support road victims and families who have lost loved ones and suffered serious injuries. Brake supports thousands of road victims each year through its National Road Victim Service, a free, specialist support service for road victims.

Campaigning for change

For this year’s Road Safety Week, Brake will also be calling on the Government for life-saving technology to be mandated for all new vehicles in the UK, in line with the vehicle General Safety Regulations that have now been introduced in Europe.
