About Brake

Brake is a registered charity. We have two aims:

Stopping the carnage and the emissions

The worldwide carnage of people being killed and maimed on roads must stop. The high levels of carbon dioxide emissions caused by road vehicles, that is contributing to the destruction of our planet and polluting our communities, must be tackled.

Caring for the victims

People whose lives have been devastated by the death of a loved one or a serious injury in the family following a road crash or other similar sudden disaster must be given the chance to recover through good levels of emotional support and practical help. It is common for victims of road crashes to be the forgotten victims, with very little help provided for them by governments.

FAQs about Brake

Does Brake provide educational services?

Yes. Brake operates educational services for a wide range of road users. To give some examples, our 2young2die project provides education to young people in schools, colleges and offender institutions about the dangers and damage caused by driving, through workshops and online resources. Our Fleet Safety Forum provides companies with management advice on stopping road crashes caused by their drivers. Our Pledge2DriveSafely project provides drivers with resources to help prevent them causing a crash. Our Road Safety Forum provides road safety professionals working in local government and elsewhere with access to the latest global findings on road safety research. We also run projects for nurseries and primary schools.

What services does Brake provides for road crash victims?

Brake’s division BrakeCare runs a helpline for road crash victims who have been bereaved or seriously injured. We produce a range of acclaimed support guides for children and families who have been bereaved and injured by road crashes. We run training courses for teachers and other support professionals such as police family liaison officers on providing empathetic and effective support for road crash victims.

Is Brake also a campaigning charity?

Yes. We campaign through the media and high profile events such as Road Safety Week (which we coordinate) and our Giant Walking Bus. We also campaign for improvements in road safety and more funding for road crash victim support by the UK Government (and also other Governments). Visit our campaign pages for more information.

How is Brake funded and is it a wealthy charity with large reserves?

Brake is funded by fundraising and donations from individuals, sponsorship by companies, and grants from private institutions and government. We also receive income from subscriptions and sales. We are a medium sized charity with an annual income ranging from between £650,000 and £1,000,000 (UK pounds). We have modest reserves of usually around six months’ running costs.

Where is Brake based and in what countries do you operate?

Brake’s headquarters are in the UK. Many of our services are for UK residents but are applicable and useable by residents of other countries. Most of our campaigning is currently carried out in the UK but is gradually being extended to other countries too.
